Zavo Groenstraat

The redevelopment of the Groenstraat campus offers a unique opportunity to rethink the relationship between architecture, landscape and education. More than a purely infrastructural intervention, the project is conceived as a long-term transformation in which the campus evolves into a green, open and future-oriented learning environment. By strengthening the connection between the school and its broader spatial, social and cultural context, the project generates a sustainable added value that extends beyond the boundaries of the campus itself.

The new school building is carefully positioned within the existing campus structure and continue the rhythm and scale of the surrounding residential context. Rather than introducing a singular monumental gesture, the campus is conceived as a small “learning village”: a collection of old and new buildings that together form a rich and human-scaled ensemble. The sports hall, classroom building and covered outdoor spaces are designed as distinct yet complementary pavilions embedded within the site.

At the centre of the campus stands Villa Amelie Feldheim, the site’s most recognisable and historically significant element. The project establishes a dialogue between the eclectic architecture of the historic villa and the rational architecture of the renovated school buildings. Brick façades, generous window openings, folded entrances and subtle ornamental detailing reinterpret characteristic architectural themes of the site in a contemporary language. Warm red and brown tones create visual coherence across the campus while reinforcing its contextual identity.

Central to the project is the idea of a future-oriented and human-centred school environment. Interior and exterior spaces are understood as equally important parts of the learning experience and are carefully interwoven through visible entrances, intuitive circulation and inhabited façades integrating seating, play elements and ecological features. Covered outdoor spaces and open circulation zones encourage informal encounter, play and interaction throughout the day.

The landscape forms the final layer that binds the campus together into one coherent environment. Inspired by the late-English and Gardenesque park typologies historically associated with eclectic villas, the design introduces a contemporary interpretation of the “villa park”: a layered green environment of winding paths, open lawns, intimate niches and carefully composed planting structures. The campus landscape reconnects with the adjacent municipal park and restores the site as an important green figure within the neighbourhood.
