Labyrint Pliniuspark - Field

In Plinius Park, nature, landscape and history come together in an exceptional setting at the edge of Tongeren. Once known for its spring water and its healing qualities, the site still carries the memory of a rich landscape shaped by Roman traces, the Fonteinbeek valley, open fields, wooded edges and views towards the city, the aqueduct and the Castle of Betho.

The proposal for the Plinius Labyrinth builds on this layered context. Rather than introducing an isolated object, the project uses the labyrinth as a catalyst for landscape restoration, biodiversity and renewed public experience. A circular path, composed of three gently shifted rings, creates a contemporary interpretation of the classical labyrinth: a slow, scenographic walk that constantly reveals new perspectives on the park and its surroundings.

The design transforms the existing grassland into a richer mosaic of landscapes: woodland edges, flower-rich meadows, rough grasslands, wetland zones and water-sensitive areas connected to the Fonteinbeek. By working with subtle changes in topography, soil and moisture, the project strengthens the ecological value of the park while creating a place of discovery, calm and wonder.

The labyrinth becomes more than a destination. It is a gentle infrastructure for walking, looking, learning and experiencing the landscape. A new landmark that reconnects visitors with the natural and historical identity of Plinius Park.
